In times of the unprecedented economic crisis and sluggish growth prospects for the upcoming years, entrepreneurs and small- and medium-sized companies – which account for 99% of European companies and over two-thirds of total employment – have a unique potential to help Europe innovate out of recession and become engines of growth, jobs and future prosperity. The Single Market Entrepreneurs (SME) Centre strives to enhance the visibility, recognise the importance and underline the transformational nature of entrepreneurs and SMEs. It provides a one-of-a-kind, inclusive platform for constructive and solution-oriented dialogue on issues pertaining to entrepreneurs and SMEs around the key themes of technology, digital skills, the single market and access to financing. The SME Centre involves distinguished thought leaders, European policymakers and experienced practitioners in an effort to empower entrepreneurs and inform policy developments. Rather than treating SMEs as a homogenous group, the SME Centre endeavours to recognise and cater to different sub-groups, i.e. freelancers, micro-multinationals, family businesses, entrepreneurs, start-ups and more established firms.
